DenilsonNeves was the skipper of the Brazilian team that went all the way to the final at the 2005 FIFA u-17 World Cup tournament in the South American nation of Peru. He was an important member of the Brazilian team that were favourites until they came unstuck against Mexico in the final.
Mexican attacker Carlos Vela would later becomethe teammate of DenilsonNeves at Arsenal. He was responsible for the first goal of the final shortly after the half hour mark. Veal scored the first goal of the final on 31 minutes for his fifth goal of the tournament. He finished as the Golden Boot winner at the end of the tournament with five goals.
Vela and his Mexican teammates scored two goals in two first half minutes to take the game away from favourites Brazil. Omar Esparza doubled the lead for his team on 33 minutes as Mexico took a two-goal lead at the end of the first 45 minutes. Mexico wrapped up the game four minutes from time thanks to the strike from Ever Guzman.
Goals from Vela, Esparza and Guzman ensured that Mexico sealed a stunning 3-0 win over the Brazilians. Until the 2005 edition of the u-17 World Cup tournament on Peruvian soil, Mexico had not won any FIFA-organised tournament.
Mexico had an almost perfect tournament except their final group game against Turkey. They had won their first two matches in Group B against Uruguay and Australia before they battled the Turkish team. Ever Guzman gave the Mexicans a first half lead before goals from Deniz Yilmaz and Caner Erkin either side of the interval gave Turkey a 2-1 win. Mexico saw off Costa Rica and the Netherlands in the quarterfinals and semifinals respectively before the final clash with the Brazilians in Lima.
