Former Arsenal midfielder Denilson has performed below expectations at his current club Santos, who are one of the biggest in Brazil.

The club also have not been up to their usual standards largely because of the loss of Neymar, who was sold to Barcelona for £ 50 million.

However, Denilson has become the target for criticism from the fans. He also underwent a knee surgery during the campaign, which did not help his case. In the end, Santos finished middle of the table, which is a far cry from the days that they won the title.

Denilson has accepted that he has not been at his best this season. His poor performances this campaign have also started transfer rumours linking him with a move to different clubs. He has a contract with the Brazilian outfit for four more years, but speaking after the end of the championship, he says that he may leave the club at the end of this year. Denilson underwent the surgery back in July, which caused him to take a break from football.

He told the football blog “There is a chance (to get out), but I have a contract with São Paulo until 2017. I do not know what the Sao Paulo or make plans with some players. My focus is in Sao Paulo, of course, but I try to work and always leave very sad, different from last year we left happy. Hopefully 2014 will be better. About my future I do not know, my season was not good.’m Not placing blame on knee surgery I did,” said the midfielder, who was once a regular at Arsenal.

Denilson has said that he is right now focusing only on Santos and does not reveal about the interest from other clubs. Since it is a long-term contract, the club may decide against selling him.
